Description

#24588 updates our CI scripts to handle build and install cudf-polars-quent so that the Quent tests are run in CI. These showed that the Quent tests are slow, despite not doing much work. All the slowness is in the setup, since we created a StreamingEngine from scratch.

This branch updates our StreamingEngine._reset method to allow for "reseting" the quent configuration. When this happens, you'll get a new new that reuses existing resources, while still getting the full engine lifecycle events that quent expects.

Allow StreamingEngine._reset to accept a new quent_context in
executor_options (removing the previous ValueError guard). Each
backend (SPMD, Ray, Dask) tears down the old Quent runtimes and
starts fresh ones when quent_context changes, with workers always
disconnected before the controller is closed to avoid collector
timeouts.

The Quent integration test fixture is updated to use the
session-scoped engine from conftest (UCX / rapidsmpf / Ray bootstrap
paid once per session) and call _reset per test to swap the Quent
context, rather than constructing a full engine per variant.

Extract the repeated close-workers / close-controller / open-collector /
open-workers / open-controller sequence into per-backend hook methods
(_quent_close, _quent_open) and a common driver (_update_quent) on the
StreamingEngine base class.

Each _reset now calls self._update_quent(...) instead of repeating the
same ~25-line block. _shutdown_spmd is also simplified to call
self._quent_close() directly.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 4.6 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The rolling fallback warning was leaking into test output because it is
emitted on Ray/Dask workers where pytest's filterwarnings cannot reach.
Configure the engine with fallback_mode="silent" in the fixture instead,
which suppresses the warning at the source.

StreamingEngine.__init__ pops allow_gpu_sharing from engine_options
before passing to polars, so it was never visible in self.config.
_reset calls that omit engine_options (e.g. the in-test quent flush)
therefore defaulted it to False, triggering the UUID-collision check on
multi-rank Ray/Dask engines.

Store it as self._allow_gpu_sharing at init time and prepend it to
engine_options in each engine's _reset → StreamingEngine.__init__ call
so the value survives every reset regardless of what the caller passes.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 4.6 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The in-test _reset call that flushes Quent events before reading them
was passing only executor_options, omitting engine_options. On a
multi-rank RayEngine this meant allow_gpu_sharing defaulted to False and
the UUID-collision guard fired.

create_streaming_options always includes allow_gpu_sharing=True so that
_reset calls made through configure_streaming_engine are safe; the bare
flush call in the test body was the only site that bypassed this.

Fix: yield (engine, base_options) from engine_with_quent_context so the
test can pass the complete options to _reset, matching every other call
in the suite.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Engine resets can now apply changed Quent telemetry settings across Dask, Ray, and SPMD execution.
    • Resetting without Quent settings now clears the active configuration and runtime.
    • Quent configuration changes are synchronized across distributed workers during engine resets.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Quent setup and shutdown now clean up resources when initialization fails or shutdown encounters an error.
    • Engine and worker cleanup continues when another shutdown step reports an error.

Changes

Streaming engine resets now support changed Quent configurations. Core reset logic delegates runtime replacement to backend hooks. Dask, Ray, and SPMD manage Quent runtime setup, replacement, synchronization, and cleanup. Tests cover reset behavior and collector cleanup on session-creation failure.

The exit-stack callbacks registered in RayEngine.__init__ and
DaskEngine.__init__ captured local variables quent_runtime and
quent_collector at construction time. After _reset changed Quent state,
those closures became stale:

- Reset None→Quent: callback passed None for both; shutdown skipped
  worker cleanup and never closed the replacement runtime (leak).
- Reset Quent→None: _quent_close already closed everything, but the
  callback tried to close the originals again (double-close).
- _shutdown_ray gated actor.close_quent on quent_collector is not None,
  so a reset that enabled Quent without a collector (disabled→enabled
  after runtime took ownership) would also skip worker-side cleanup.

Fix:
- Read self._quent_runtime and self._quent_collector at callback fire
  time instead of capturing init-time locals.
- Track self._quent_collector for the brief init window between
  start_collector and QuentControllerRuntime.create (the error path);
  clear it once the runtime takes ownership.
- Clear self._quent_collector in shutdown() alongside _quent_runtime.
- Fix _shutdown_ray gate: quent_runtime is not None or quent_collector
  is not None (either means actors have live Quent worker runtimes).

Exercise configured-to-configured replacement.

test_quent_lifecycle assigns new contexts directly to engine.config; it does not call _reset with a second non-None context. Therefore, it does not detect the required close-old/open-new path. Replace the first direct assignment with one _reset call and assert two Init and two Exit engine events. Keep the later direct assignments to preserve query-context coverage.

Questions for me to see if there are any implicit invariants:

  1. When would new_quent_context == existing_quent_context?
  2. Is a None existing_quent_context mostly passed when the __init__ happens?

Adding to @mroeschke's questions, from my reading (@TomAugspurger please correct me if I am wrong):

  • new == existing happens on most resets, since every backend's _reset defaults new to existing when quent_context isn't in executor_options. It also covers None == None at __init__ with Quent off.
  • existing is None is always the case at __init__ (hard-coded in dask.py:1128, ray.py:975, spmd.py:653), on a reset where Quent was off, and in SPMD after the early close (spmd.py:1024).

One thing that worries me: this compares the whole QuentConfig, including the per-query fields. Callers change those fields in engine.config between collects, e.g. the benchmark runner sets query_name per iteration (streaming/benchmarks/utils.py:1193). So a later _reset with the original config looks like a change, and Quent gets torn down and restarted.

The restart reuses the same engine_id, so the output directory ends up with two Engine lifecycles under one id. Toggling A → None → A does the same.

Could we compare only engine_id and output_root here, and raise if a closed engine_id is re-opened?

But (correct me if I'm wrong), regular users will never trigger a _reset, right? IIUC, _reset is only used by test code.

Regular usage, including our streaming benchmarks, will hit this code path when the engine is initially created, and they'll compare a QuentConfig with None and setup the Quent engine. But all subsequent collect calls will use the one engine and so use the one QuentConfig (which might have been mutated to update the query group / query name).

Could we make the decision collective? quent_changing is decided per rank, but the close/open it guards is collective. If each rank calls _reset with its own QuentConfig() (different engine_ids), rank 0 sees no change while the others do, and the job hangs. A hang is hard to diagnose, so I'd rather have rank 0 decide (broadcast it, or all-gather a flag) than rely on callers passing identical configs.

If _quent_close() raises here, _quent_runtime is cleared but the rest of the engine still points at the old runtime: engine.config's quent_context, _quent_output_root, and on Dask _dask_context.quent_controller_runtime.

Could we clear those too before re-raising, so a failed close doesn't leave the engine configured against a closed runtime?

I think this is handled / obviated by b2b0a4f.

That said, I'm not sure what the impact of an exception here would be. If we're calling _quent_close() (or now StreamingEngine._set_quent(None) then I think by definition we're shutting down the engine. Since the engine is shut down / shutting down, it's not usable anymore.

Could these three methods be a single stub on StreamingEngine? Close is always followed by open, except at shutdown, so one hook that does both seems enough. Something like:

def _set_quent(self, config: QuentConfig | None) -> QuentConfig | None:
    """
    Replace this engine's Quent runtimes.

    unless it is ``None``. Returns the effective configuration (on SPMD,
    rank 0's synchronized copy).
    """
    raise NotImplementedError

The call sites then become:

# __init__
executor_options["quent_context"] = self._set_quent(quent_context)

# _reset
if new_quent_context != existing_quent_context:
    new_quent_context = self._set_quent(new_quent_context)
executor_options["quent_context"] = new_quent_context

# shutdown
self._set_quent(None)

Is _update_quent needed? Besides the comparison, it only sets _quent_output_root, which StreamingEngine.__init__ already does from executor_options["quent_context"] (line 363), and every caller re-runs __init__ right after. On SPMD, the _reset comparison is also where the collective decision (spmd.py:1017) belongs.

🟡 Minor · Clear the worker runtime even when close() raises. · dask.py:472-474

python/cudf_polars/cudf_polars/engine/dask.py:472-474
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Clear the worker runtime even when close() raises.

QuentWorkerRuntime.close() can raise an ExceptionGroup. For example, worker_handle.exit or session.close can fail. If it raises here, mp_ctx.quent_worker_runtime still points at the closed runtime.

On the next _set_quent(config) call, _update_quent_on_worker tries to close the stale runtime again. If that close raises again, the worker never creates the new runtime. _worker_evaluate asserts only that quent_worker_runtime is not None. A later query can therefore pass the assert and then emit events on a closed session.

SPMDEngine._close_quent_worker already uses try/finally for this case. Use the same pattern here. RankActor.update_quent in python/cudf_polars/cudf_polars/engine/ray.py (Lines 380-382) has the same defect and needs the same fix.

🛡️ Proposed fix
     if mp_ctx.quent_worker_runtime is not None:

+            mp_ctx.quent_worker_runtime.close()
+        finally:
+            mp_ctx.quent_worker_runtime = None

Ensure worker runtime references are cleared even when close() raises by
wrapping the close operation in try/finally and assigning None in the finally
block. Apply this to the mp_ctx.quent_worker_runtime cleanup and the
corresponding RankActor.update_quent self._quent_worker_runtime cleanup,
preserving exception propagation.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve allow_gpu_sharing during a Quent reset.

If a multi-rank engine was constructed with allow_gpu_sharing=True, a reset that omits engine_options passes no sharing flag here. StreamingEngine.__init__ then defaults the flag to False and raises on shared GPU UUIDs. This happens after _set_quent has replaced the runtimes, so the failed reset also leaves the engine’s configuration out of step with them. Store the construction-time setting and pass it through each reset unless the caller supplies a value. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Preserve the construction-time allow_gpu_sharing setting across Quent resets:
store it when the engine is initialized and merge it into the engine_options
passed by the reset path unless the caller explicitly provides a value. Update
the reset logic around _set_quent and StreamingEngine.__init__ so runtime
replacement and engine configuration remain consistent.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve allow_gpu_sharing across Quent-only resets.

When num_ranks > 1 and shared GPUs are allowed, a reset that changes only quent_context can pass an empty engine_options mapping to StreamingEngine.__init__. The constructor defaults allow_gpu_sharing to False and can then reject duplicate GPU UUIDs. _set_quent() runs first, so the reset applies the new Quent context before this later constructor call fails. Store the construction-time value and re-supply it when rebuilding the engine options.

🟡 Minor · Make worker-runtime construction transactional. · ray.py:387-394

python/cudf_polars/cudf_polars/engine/ray.py:387-394
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Make worker-runtime construction transactional.

QuentWorkerRuntime.create creates a QuentSession before worker initialization and resource declaration. If a later operation raises, _quent_worker_runtime is never assigned, so _set_quent(None) cannot close that session. RankActor.shutdown also has no reference to close it. A failed Quent reset can therefore leak a worker session and its collector connection. Move rollback ownership into QuentWorkerRuntime.create so partially initialized sessions close before the exception is re-raised. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update QuentWorkerRuntime.create to make worker-runtime construction
transactional: ensure any QuentSession created before worker initialization or
resource declaration is closed if a later step raises, then re-raise the
original exception. Keep successful initialization unchanged and ensure
RankActor’s _quent_worker_runtime assignment and shutdown behavior remain
intact.
